Sometimes you take a chapter off to find a rare treasure and strengthen your character. Sometimes you rush to get all the towns in the new chapter by being the first to show up with a bag of spinners. That damn worm can paralyze you with quake on the first turn and you watch helplessly as he strikes you dead or worse, wastes a bunch of turns striking you dead.

A big bug can eat that whole stack of deathblocks. You can lose a fight to a weaker player after an unlucky miss. Damaging your opponents lead and catching up in level is great. If you are in last long enough you get to really shake things up as the darkling. Defeating a player lets you take things from them and immediately catch up to their level.
